China and the Allies By Arnold Henry Savage. Landor

This one is another period account of turn of the century China. It focuses on the Boxers (Volunteer United Trained Bands) and the first chapter is quite useful for identifying Boxer inscriptions and those of the big knife society they turned into. I had not drawn the connection between the Boxers and the TaTao Hwo(sic). Are they the same big knife society that fought the Japanese in WWII?
The rest of the book mostly describes boxers charging machine guns and the predictable results. There are some pictures of coastal forts and maps drawn by the author.
There is one illustration of some sort of changdao/dadao that was interesting. It showed a long handle with a ring pommel, a square guard, and a narrow curved blade with the hint of a medial ridge and a Japanese style point.
This book can be downloaded. Feel free to PM me for assistance.
Thanks,
Josh
