Re: YMT compared to Chen Style
In that case, you should be looking for a teacher rather than a style. There are martial artists and dance teachers in all styles. If you find someone who demonstrates real martial skill and students who do the same, you have an answer.

Re: Trying to teach Taichi as martial arts
That is also my biggest problem - having people to train with. There's no problem practising forms alone, or even getting people of other styles to practise weapons skills with, but the taijiquan emptyhand applications need training partners - not just once a year when we've saved up enough to bring...

Re: Trying to teach Taichi as martial arts
That's a really good point, Joshua. My school is filled with students up to age 19 because I'm a school teacher of over 20 years experience. The right ones come to the right teacher for them at the right time.

Re: Trying to teach Taichi as martial arts
Yeah, I haven't found anything that works either, as far as gathering a good committed group of adults goes. It must be frustrating hearing answers you've already tried and they haven't worked. I've tried getting groups together for adults. They seem to work for awhile and then people only come when...

Re: Trying to teach Taichi as martial arts
Just remember the old masters often only found a few, or even one student, in a lifetime, who had the right attitude and ability to be worthy of passing on their art. Then, those few were, or became, family members - not visting students. The commitment was from both sides. People in Australia have ...

Re: Trying to teach Taichi as martial arts
I am a primary school teacher so I know kids and it's easy to find them. Kids come by word of mouth. All you have to do is advertise for a few keen ones. Then, if they like it, they will also bring their friends. I had to make padded swords for them. Here's a link to the pattern http://www.chinese-s...

Re: Trying to teach Taichi as martial arts
What part of Australia are you in? I'm in NSW, Blue Mountains. We're a branch of GRTC and, of course, emphasise martial skill. Most of the students here are children with no other experience of taji. We start them with sword and teach the principles from that. Then, when they are ready to train in e...

Re: Taiji toes
I tried a few things and settled on skateboarding shoes for most training. Reasons: Flat soles for stability. Good support for feet. Smooth soles to prevent twisting ankles during pivots. Training on concrete has disastrous consequences for my ankles (bones slipping out of place) and knees (torn car...

Wooden Sword Winners (picture heavy)
Tony Mosen recently donated some wooden swords to the Aussie Kids group. They were to be given to deserving child students. Not all have been delivered yet. Tony donated three jian. I added a couple of his miaodao because there were just too many kids who deserved to win a sword. I'll add pictures t...

Tashi, I am training with three Canberra students on the 26th of this month. They will be sleeping overnight here on the 25th. You are most welcome to come and join in for the day. We'll be spending a whole day on Section 2 Michuan, jian, miaodao and dao.

Re: What is distinctive about Taijiquan?
I'm certainly no expert and have only studied taijiquan. I'm repeating what I've been taught to say that taijiquan is recognised as an internal martial art while many others are external. This question now needs input from people who have studied more than one art.

Re: What is distinctive about Taijiquan?
Taijiquan is distinctive from most martial arts in that it trains a person to strengthen and make use of their ligaments bones, mind and breath, rather than muscles. It brings energy for every strike through a rooted leg, using the whole body as a tool to power it. Of course, many students tend to u...

Dao Form Applications
I'm working on Yangshi Taiji Dao, so starting this thread to ask about applications for some of the movements. I think the correct position of hands, legs and the sword, will become more apparent if I know what the movement is doing. The first one I'd like to ask about is the double kick movement. W...
