Re: Lengthening a Tang on a Sanmai into a Two-hander?
Happy New Year. Thank you for this suggestion. Wouldn't that effect the play of the sword, since it would no longer functionally be full tang? Isn't it better to have an extension welded on to the tang? Philip Tom, any thoughts on this? If you have time to speak directly, that would be great. I trie...

Lengthening a Tang on a Sanmai into a Two-hander?
Lengthening a Tang on a Sanmai into a Two-hander? Can it be done properly, or bad idea...? I have some questions about modifying a sanmai Royal Peony into a hand-and-halfer or two-hander. Is there a professional, reasonably priced way to have this done? I have one of the Sanmai with brass fittings t...

The Sworsdmanship Festival - After Action Review
This is an AAR After Action Review of the International Chinese Swordsmanship Festival that was just held in Estonia July 1st-7th, 2007. Albert's unit on spear, staff, and pike handling was highly informative. The major value that I picked up was how to handle the spear with an emphasis on maintaini...

Making a hard wood handle for a jian.
How would one go about making a hard wood handle for a jian and getting the proper materials to do it? What are the best tools to use, etc?

BASICS Of Day to Day JIAN Maintenance
It would be a great help if someone could list the basics of how to take care of a sword from day to day. For example: Application of oil, and oil type, rust prevention, etc. Anything else a sword owner should know. Is there any difference in maintenance methods between antiques versus the Huanuo bl...

After Use Protective Pads
Laoshi makes a very good point about protecting injuries from getting worse. I just tested hocky gloves. If you get a size that is a bit large for you, you should have decent wrist mobility. They are bulky, but offer protection for the hands that is thorough. We thought it was overkill. We are stick...

Sword Pollishing
After meeting Phillip Thom at the Antique Arms Show at Timonium yesterday, I got the impression that there are very few Sword Pollishers around. I asked him if he had considered apprenticeships or courses that might introduce people to the discipline so that it does not die out. He said that there w...

Differerent circumastances- Practice & battlefield armor
After a great swordsmanship seminar with Rodell Laoshi, a couple weeks ago, (feb 18-20) I came to a couple conclusions for protective gear. Light padding is needed for the knees, elbows, hands and wrists in addition to the regular mouth piece and goggles. (We used soccer knee pads/ shin guards to co...

Take the duifang`s balance, armor or none.
Just a thought- When Linda mentioned a Zha or ci to vulnerable points on the face, it occurred to me that even if the thrust doesn`t penetrate the armor, it may be effective. A zha could be used to drive a person off balance by their head and then take advantage of their imbalance, (a central strate...
