Re: Becoming more martial
I am a believer that both the soft methods and faster harder methods are equally indispensable for developing martial skill. This is also why I feel that weapons training is vital to martial skill, it involves the manipulation of energies and momentum, that when approaching real application speed in...

Re: Wind blows away the plum flowers technique- question
I am by no means an expert or even an authority in any way regarding this topic, however I wonder if it is the case that there are reasons behind the move that factor into more than swordsmanship. The "public" Jian form is said by some to be about more than swordsmanship insofar as it relates to the...

Re: Wind blows away the plum flowers technique- question
I read that the area it targets should be the stomach... the cut in the version you give is higher than what I have been taught. By no means did I intend to imply that it was a block or a ward off type move. It may be, but I do not know that or believe that. the presentation of the edge, the angle e...

Re: Wind blows away the plum flowers technique- question
I will share my perspective, which is mine alone. An archaic text I love describe four main categories of weapon moves, one of which is whirling the weapon, the application given typically is to create space or openings, usually involving facing multiple opponents. You can find the same type of move...

Re: YMT for martial application/fa jing versus other Yang fo
I am not sure if it is quicker, but it can allow you to reach your opponent easily but still make you hard to reach and it also allows for some very cold kicks that opponents cannot see or feel coming. Fajing is controversial and means different things to different people so I do not wish to address...

Re: YMT for martial application/fa jing versus other Yang fo
In my experience the front weighting is martially limiting and the back weighting gives serious advantages over it.

Re: Taijiquan against common attacks
I have a few things I use against flurries and combination attacks in practice. It always depends on the attack, I do not use formulaic counters, however I do use several patterns in a "listening" manner. Unfortunately I am not sure I can describe the patterns well. I will say that one of my own "te...

Re: Taijiquan against common attacks
Fast inside hook... Hmm I tend to use a few methods for stuff like that Mostly I stick, that voids a lot of attacks, but I use a few other methods. One is a strike to the upper part of the arm that even with fast jabs does not move much. There is a strike to the underside of the arm, a rising backfi...

Re: Taijiquan against common attacks
I don't think much about it, so it is good for me to ponder. I tend to use Peng for a lot of stuff. I tend to kick a lot too. Common attacks... I guess punches are pretty common, I tend to just stick to them and they never seem to arrive. I use a lot of wrapping and binding, tend to target the throa...

Re: Fajing on coke cans
This puts us to the position, where we can not criticize any martial art or training method, which is claimed to be only for real fighting for "life and death." This is taken advantage of by many schools which claim to teach "death touch" methods. Allowing them to make (in some cases) somewhat outr...

Re: Fajing on coke cans
I do not believe that the MMA venue is a good one for testing martial skill. http://www.yangchengfu.org/ at this site is a mention of Yang Ban-hou fighting: He watched Ban-hao blind one opponent using the same Kenpo technique we demonstrated; and, another time he paralyzed an opponent using the same...

Re: Fajing on coke cans
I thought if I really tried, I would give him whiplash or a contusion, but I didn't want to go that far, so I just let the argument slide. What makes you think that you could really do it in competition or in real self-defence situation? That is a good question. It does beg the question though; why...
