Re: Becoming more martial
IMHO Don't be too concerned, it's part of the progression. Journey not destination and all that. Practically speaking there is always a refinement that can be made in terms of the form and applications as an art form. In a martial context - combat is chaos - you need to be adaptable, make minor adju...

Re: Breathing, chi & focus: application and form.
The initial movement as far as I know is a matter of intent. if your intention is to develop 'fang song', which Laoshi has previously referred to as "dynamic relaxation", then the breathing and intention coming together to focus on sinking makes sense. This is because you are gathering your concentr...

Re: Trying to teach Taichi as martial arts
agree. :) Funnily enough and on a possible tangent I hooked up with a Muay Chaiya (a non-sport lineage of muay thai) group in Thailand for a month recently to brush up on sanshou. To my surprise many of the concepts taught line up well with the principles of Taijiquan. I.e. fangsong, correcting the ...

Re: Trying to teach Taichi as martial arts
Hi Panda, My two cents.. Also from GRTC Australia in the Blue Mountains (but currently busy with uni). The most difficult thing about teaching Taijiquan is the perception problem that is pervasive due to the marketing of things like Tai Chi for arthritis etc, and its association with people of advan...

Re: Motivation Ideas Wanted
One of the greatest teachings of Taijiquan is perseverance. I find it useful to vary the practice, to give myself small goals and as I have an affinity for empty hand, particularly chin na, I like to brainstorm different applications (i haven't got any one to try them on though, so its all visualisa...

Re: Intent versus Chi
During sitting neigong meditation, I performed the circulation and then brought the intent back to the dantien. Shortly after when I let the intent go and relaxed with fangsong I experienced an overwhelming ecstatic feeling mentally and physically through the back and around the crown. I experienced...

Re: Has anybody read this book?
I don't think I've read it, however, zhan zhuang was apparently the original name given to baguazhang before it was renamed. Therefore it may be drawing upon the internal component of that art/style. Though I'm not sure.

Re: Internal/External with strength training
If you don't have 'fangsong' developed through zhangzhuan then you are working at cross purposes. If one has patience to persevere with the fundamental exercises, that are the basis of Yangjia Michuan Taijiquan as a system, one will in conjunction with the forms eventually come to have all the stren...
