Looking upward, downward, advancing and retreating

Post by Dan » Fri Oct 17, 2008 9:03 am

The classics say:
Looking upward, it seems higher and higher
looking downward, it seems deeper and deeper
Advancing, it seems further and further
Retreating, it seems shorter and shorter.
What does this mean?

This is, to me, an expression of sticking and following. When the duifang tries to retreat, he finds you are the same distance from him as when he started. When the duifang attacks, you listen and follow, moving with him and he'll find that you are just as far away as when he started his attack.

this is not the best translation i have seen.
what it refers to is sticking/listening energy.
if your ability is a atom better than that of your opponent he will find it impossible to get a grab on you.
even though you are only a millimeter away it will seem like lightyears.
back in the 70,s i fought a white crane fighter with quite a bit of street fighting history.
after the fight he told me how he trained for years in the three levels of man/earth/heaven.
this meant he would jump up in the air and use a lot of ground techniques.
he said that whatever he tried i was right there staring into his eyes.
i commented that i had been trained in sticking.
he is now a tai chi man.
the way that can

Mind Intent

Post by Dan » Tue Oct 21, 2008 11:05 pm

Thanks for the responses (and the story!).

Looking in the same section, it reads:
Saying "looking downward, it seems deeper and deeper," imagine beating the opponent into the earth.
That strikes me as referencing mind intent.
if the opponent seeks to push me down, I descend so low he loses his center of gravity.
That sounds like sticking and following.

I'm curious how one can be under a duifong and still beat them into the earth.
