Confucian social ladder...

Post by DavidM » Wed Jan 03, 2007 6:04 am

One of the times Scott Rodell was over here (in Australia) he mentioned that martial artists (such as Yang Luchan) were, in the Confucian scale of things quite low in social status.

I am wondering if anyone knows if this was martial artists specifically, or were they grouped with other similar 'professions' like soldiers and mercenaries ?

Laoshi has described that martial artists were generally held in the same regard as musicians and prostitutes
"There is nothing that does not become easier through familiarity" (Santideva).

"We become what we do repeatedly. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit" (Aristotle).

Yes, but I'm wondering if that was just martial artists, and that maybe soldiers were at another point in the 'scale', or were they all lumped together ?
