eight banners

Post by ynze » Wed Dec 22, 2010 4:23 pm

Since there is no GRTC Cafe or any other place for miscellaneous issues I pose the question here.

For a presentation I would like to print the eight banners on A4 or A3 format. Unfortunately all that I was able to find on the internet is of poor quality. Does anybody know where to find good images of the banners.

Thanx Ynze

When I need Chinese historical images, I usually try the Chinese search engine http://www.baidu.com/

Here are the image results from Baqi, Eight Banners (八旗)
http://image.baidu.com/i?tn=baiduimage& ... 0%CB%C6%EC

& fro Eight Military Banners (八旗军)
http://image.baidu.com/i?ct=201326592&c ... z=0&fm=rs2

Good luck...

Just for viewing fun, here's a QIng Navy Flag from 1857... as you can image, period flags are quite rare...

The Qng had all kinds of Banners & no real proper National Flag until one was forced upon them by you Europeans...

Here's one late Naval Banner-

You can find links to more at: http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/cn-imp.html

Here's another from WIkipedia-

"An Imperial Chinese junk flag captured during the First China War 1839-42. It is part of a collection belonging to Sir Robert Oliver (1783-1848), Superintendent of the Indian Navy. The hand sewn flag is made of silk with a cotton hoist. It is a triangular shape in light blue with a darker blue hoist and red indented border. There is a silver and gold dragon and pearl motif in centre surrounded by clouds with lightning flashes in the borders. The dragon has four toes."

It's funny you write about us Eurepeans. All though I'm not absolutely sure, but I think it's the Brits who had a large influence there.
They're the least of the Europeans.
They are Islanders and I believe that the fast majority still do not realy want to be part of Europe.

Chinese Military Banners

In the woodblock above, you can see that most of the banners carried in battle were unit banners, these often had the name of the general leading those troops in a circle in the center. The color of the banner itself likely related to which of the Eight Banners that group is from.

Qing Battle Paintings

Post by Scott M. Rodell » Wed Feb 23, 2011 2:27 pm

A great number of Qing era paintings of battles & Bannermen can be found at: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Categ ... ng_Dynasty

Many of these battle scenes give an idea of the unit formations & the flags they flew. Here's just one example:

Capture of Zhengxiong, Yunnan

Many of the images, including the above, can be enlarged to see the details in more detail.
