Taijiquan in New York City?

Postby Dan » Sat Oct 03, 2009 12:36 pm

The Big Apple is chock full of taijiquan instructors. Are any of them close to grtc?

I saw this: http://aymta.org/home/resources/aymtaschools.html
and this: http://www.williamccchen.com/

I wondered what advice might be found for finding a good school/teacher.

Few TJQ schools these days are "old school" martial arts schools; even GRTC-DC has ita share of students who come in for the form & some push hands & will never think of moving up to sanshou... that being said, just give any school that looks good a call & see if they practice the entire system or do they cherry pick a few things out of the system. If they have free sanshou, go check it out & see if the students are at least using some of the skills of TJQ. Don't expect the perfected art in the sanshou students, just look & see if they are working in the right direction, or if it is just another kick boxing class...

It might be worth mentioning NYC is the home of Patience Tai Chi, the school of William Phillips who was a direct student of Professor Cheng Man Ch'ing (Zheng Manquing). While Laoshi Phillips does not practice the Michuan style of GRTC I can't really think of a much better school to go to for the 37 form. Just a student's $0.02
