Is there a list of cuts for the dao ?

Post by Robert Bemoras » Sun Sep 28, 2008 9:05 am

I was hoping to find a list of cuts that are common to Yang style dao. I have been pouring over information on this and other websites, and laoshi's books and tapes. The only thing that I seem to be able to find is jian cuts. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

By cuts do you mean techniques? (Sorry I'm a new guy).

If so, in Chen style TC Broadsword they have:

gun - parrying by turning left
bi - parrying by closing to the right
zha - thrust
lan - deflecting with the rear side of the broadsword
pi - chopping vertically
kan - cutting
liao - circular deflection point facing upward
jie - blocking with the edge
chan - circular twisting
dou - shaking
jia - raising opponents weapon overhead
mo - slicing either levelly or diagonally upwards
tiao - upward flicking motion using the top of weapon

Sorry if this is not what you are looking for.

Thanks for this list of cuts for the Chen Style, it is always interesting to compare systems, most of these are in common with the Yang Style Taiji ]Dao.

If I may add some detail-
A dao is a single edged weapon, usually curved, thus it is a saber. The term broadsword is a misnomer.

Zha is specifically a downward poke. Ci is thurst.
Lan literally means to obstruct or block, in the Yang style saber either the cutting edge or back edge may be employed to lan depending on what the weapon will come into contact with, if a soft target, then the edge maybe used.
I like your translation of Liao, but keep in mind that this movement also includes the upper sweeping counter-cut.
Jie means to intercept or block & is used to jam the duifang's movement by stepping in & pushing the edge into the duifang's arms, generally one never blocks with the edge.
Chan means to bind & is a deflecting movement where the saber wraps around the body to gain momentum following the deflection.

By in large, these cuts are common to pretty much all Chinese systems of saber swordsmanship.

Laoshi and Joe,
Thank you and yes, this is the type of information that I am looking for. I learned and practiced the jian cuts/ movements prior to learning the jian form and I have found a better understanding of the movements through an understanding of the applications. (Some people look like they are just waving a stick.) I also try to have the same application based approach to empty hand practice and it seems to have helped me there as well. With that being said, I am going to attempt to follow this same path with the dao. Thanks again....Bob
