Sword guard

I was wondering if the Jian could be better if it used a round or oval guard. It would protect the holding hand when clashing with the other swords or weapons. I have no practical experience except with my Aiki sword practice.

What is the traditional guard called on the Jian?

During the Ming dynasty, some jian had saber type guards, as can be seen in various tomb figures-
