Traditional Korean Sword - Choson Sebup

Post by Bruce W Sims » Thu Jan 24, 2008 1:38 pm

Dear Folks:

This may be an odd post for an area dedicated to Chinese sword. I thought I would post some links regarding traditional Korean sword for people to enjoy and maybe to comment on as it might compare with what comparable arts in Japan might do. FWIW.

Here's one that is a bit more "demo" in intent.

And lastly, the material of the first clip ("Choson Sebup") performed in traditional armour.

Enjoy.

Thank you Bruce those videos are really great, every time I see a Korean swordsmanship demonstration video I am always impressed. Out of curiosity, I would love to get a suit of Korean Armour like the one in the video do you have any idea on where practitioners get theirs from or do you know of any places who sell them?

The Korean film star who demonstrated that material probably used the assets from the film company for which he works. Unlike the occasional MA suppliers who have replicas of Japanese armour for sale, I have yet to find anyone on the open market who sells such things. In all honesty, though, you have me wondering if such things COULD be purchased by going through the Korean film industry. From the standpoint of accuracy though, I think that its important to remember that only officers and non-commissioned officers would probably have worn such armour. The typical soldier wouldn't expect to be so well taken care of. FWIW.

Best Wishes,

Bruce

A student of mine just returned from Korean & brought me back two nice books about Korean sword & traditional weapons:

Korean Traditional Weapons, published by the War Memorial of Korea, from an exhibition in 2004 (http://www.warmemo.or.kr/)

The Swords of Korea, published by Daegu National Museum, 2007
