i'm interested in having a spear made and i was wondering if anyone has advice for types of wood and overall dimensions. there is a thread in the Historical Arms forum that gives some historical examples but i'm not sure where i would get white waxwood and the lengths vary greatly (9-15 feet). here's that thread if anyone is interested:

i like the brown spear at Great River. if i remember correctly, it's about 9 ft and has a taper. apparently the historical spears are not tapered.
so i'm looking for any kind of guidance on:
-types of wood
-length
-tapered vs. untapered
-if tapered, what's a a good diameter at each end
many thanks!

Re: dimensions for a practic spear
The one at the DC Center is teak, you probably aren´t going to find that around, but Rock Hard Maple is good, or any wood used to make bows.Benny Bangarms wrote:... interested in having a spear made... guidance on:

Your spear should be 9 to 12 feet long & tapered from about 1 1/2¨ down to an inch.
