Questions and Answers with the Monk from Brooklyn

An American at the Shaolin Temple

By Antonio Graceffo

A competitive boxer and Kung Fu student since the age of twelve, Antonio was always inspired by the TV show, ?Kung Fu,? with David Carradine, and dreamed of studying Kung Fu at the Shaolin Temple. After the 911 terrorist attacks in New York City, Antonio quit his life as an investment banker, and headed off to Asia, in search of his dream. He first studied in Taiwan for fifteen months, learning to speak Mandarin, and improving his Kung Fu.

In January of 2003, shortly after finalizing his plans to go to Shaolin, Antonio injured his knee in a fight, and had to endure two months of agonizing physical therapy. On March 1, of that same year, Antonio landed in China, still limping, and unable to stand for long periods of time. Antonio bribed his way into the temple, and spent the next three months training and fighting with the students of Shaolin. He learned much about Chinese culture, dispelled many myths about the Shaolin Temple, and experienced at first hand, the paranoia and insanity of the SARS epidemic. The temple administration tried to confiscate his photos, but Antonio made an escape to Hong Kong, and published both his diaries and photos, in a book, entitled The Monk from Brooklyn.

Come hear Antonio talk about the exciting reality of training in the Shaolin Temple. Ask the questions that have always plagued you. And, pick up a signed copy of the Monk From Brooklyn
