Terra Cotta Soldier Armour

Post by Linda Heenan » Wed Oct 14, 2009 11:31 pm

I'm studying the details of the armour on terra cotta warriors today. Just wondering if anyone knows about the details on these outfits. Are these ties decorative? If so, does anyone know if they signified rank? What might they have been made of? Was there some other purpose?

Also, is that leather lacing on the outside of the spauldron? If so, what would be the purpose? Perhaps it would be too risky using something that could be easily cut. Thoughts anyone? I'm writing a webpage on it that looks at the detail rather than another of the multitude on the history. What else do you notice about these pictures? Perhaps the centre one isn't armour at all. Was the armour laid over the top of a gambeson, which is all the centre figure is wearing?
