All I know about riding is to try not to fall off, but I thought this image from the Freer Gallery (http://www.asia.si.edu/) might be of interest... Those interested in arms of the period should take note of the hilt design...

Yes, it is generally accepted that disk type guards were adopted onto Chinese sabers, from Japanese sources, during the early Ming dynasty, when large numbers of blades were imported from Japan to China.
