Chinese Sword Stands

Post by Scott M. Rodell » Sat Nov 27, 2010 5:43 pm

Antique Chinese sword stands & weapons racks in general are fairly rare. Over the years I've only found a few sword stands, which are essential table screens with hooks on them for the weapons to hang horizontally. But I came across this painting of (I believe) Dorgon with a jian in a stand by his side at http://club.china.com/data/thread/56881 ... 4/8_1.html.

Well, I got a stand with a heavy wooden basis plate, a one-arm vertical beam, with a claw-like hand to hold the vertical sword, which has to be in it's scabbard. Horicontal stands also offer the possibility to show the blade, which is nice, too, isn't it?

Daojiazi

Post by Scott M. Rodell » Tue Nov 30, 2010 8:50 am

Here's one example of the most common style of Chinese Sword Stand, called a Daojiazi in Mandarin. We sold this one thru Seven Stars Trading a couple of years back.

Daojiazi Side View

Post by Scott M. Rodell » Tue Nov 30, 2010 8:51 am

From theis side view of the above daojiazi (Sword Stand) you can see how they are typically designed to hold swords on both their front & back sides. Everyone that I have seen has also hade the "Wu" character in the center.

This sounds like a version of Japanese katana stands that are designed to hold swords vertically, what do you think?

I really like the vertical style sword stand and when I finally get around to having my custom jian made I'm going to display it in that style stand.

Another Chinese Sword Stands

Post by Scott M. Rodell » Wed Dec 08, 2010 9:07 am

Most of the stands I've seen are about 31" (79 cm.) tall and 18" (46 cm.) wide. All are quite ornate & made as quality pieces of furniture.

Here's an interesting variant on a Chinese sword stand that holds the sword vertically-
