Re: Cutting Tatami
I soaked the tatami unrolled, in the bath, overnight. It was then left to drain outside for 4 hours. We do not have bamboo, so I used branches off a fruit tree. One long mat was rolled around the branch. Next time I will make sure the mat is neat at the bottom. http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/177...

Re: Is this taiji?
Without a school to attend and a teacher to correct and train you, several times a week, I don't think it's possible for anyone except the most physically talented to reach a standard where their taiji self defence is useful. Joshua, you have put in an extraordinary effort to study by yourself. Is y...

Re: Is this taiji?
It won't happen, Joshua. You're too good with words to strike out physically in anger. That said, words spoken in anger, sarcasm or derision, do far more damage than physical violence, since the wounds may never heal. It was a wise man that likened the tongue to the rudder of a ship. If you control ...

Re: Cutting Tatami
Thanks, Laoshi. My mats have arrived. David and I will cut them when he comes up for a weekend of training on the 24th and 25th. We'll take pictures of the whole process and hopefully get some good ones to add to this discussion.

Re: How Tony Mosen Jian Handle Compares to Real Jian
I have several of Tony's jian in constant use. The handles are all the same length except the tournament version he made me. It is slightly longer to give balance to a heavier blade. I have both wood and grip wrapped hilts among the swords I use. I don't really notice when fighting because I'm also ...

Re: Motivation Ideas Wanted
Here's the first idea - one that works for me. Set small goals that depend on only you to acheive. Make them challenging but acheivable. This works for the goal setters among us who must see completed and assessible results to be motivated. (or you could join something with belt levels  ) It wi...

Motivation Ideas Wanted
I'd like to pool a few student ideas. Have you ever felt the effort you put in in training is not reflected in the progress you make? I suppose almost everyone feels like that sometimes. What do you do in those times, to reinspire yourself, recapture the fun of taijiquan, etc? Do those efforts work?

Drawing Techniques
Those drawing techniques are interesting - something to practise in our miaodao training this afternoon.

Congratulations to our Estonian Classmates
Hey everyone, look what I just found on Facebook. This is Marko, Kadri and Roland with the medals they won in a local Tuishou competition. That was way back in May. Congratulations and good on you guys for having a go. We're all proud of you. Every little bit you do builds up our worldwide school. h...

Re: Name of Wooden Swords
Just a little note on the wearing of silk mandarin jackets and taiji uniforms. The reason some teachers or students wear them is out of respect to the preferences of their teacher or school, or out of necessity to appear legit in a world of symbolic meaning. Appearances still speak loudly of skill i...

Re: Name of Wooden Swords
Interesting discussion :D . I don't think it matters what we wear or what we call our swords. Being Aussie, the practicalities are that mujian is a whole syllable shorter than wooden jian. Aussies love to shorten words. For the purposes of my website - wooden sword is a high traffic attracting keywo...

Re: jian from kris cutlery
Thanks Jon, what a bargain as a first sword for beginner kids. I'm going to let our young students know in case they want one. As you said, we use it for soft targets only - fruit, vegetables, and soft plastic bottles. We use Huanuo or Zheng Wu swords for the more solid targets. I'd use the new SMR ...

Well done
Onya, Matt. I enjoyed watching that. It's useful to have video to see what to work on later. They didn't allow any at my recent competition (forms and push hands). Hey, the audience were all supporting the other guy.... We need to send a cheer team along for our players. If one person from a school ...

Re: Cutting Tatami
My computer is refusing to open pdfs at the moment. I've made a stand like this before, so the foot structure is familiar. For others reading this thread in the future, clear instructions are a good idea. What size of sharpened dowel should be slipped inside the hole?
