Becoming more martial
I'm studying the YMT form and have completed the 13 postures and Duan 1. I attend a Tui Shou class offered once a week. I practice sitting meditation at each class and I have some questions. My eventual goal is good health and to merge chi, li and shen and develop my martial skills with the intent o...

Re: YMT 13 postures versus Duans 1, 2 & 3
Hi Scott. Sorry for the long delayed reply. I've been off working on Duan 1. I've now, I'll use the word memorized rather than learned, as I assume I will never in the remainder of my lifetime (I'm 53) learn, as in all there is to know, the 13 postures and Duan 1. I took your advice to heart and too...

Re: YMT for martial application/fa jing versus other Yang fo
Because of the ability to move quicker with more weight off the front foot or for other reasons too? If others, can you elaborate? What about the two styles effect on building fa jing and releasing it?

YMT for martial application/fa jing versus other Yang forms
Is the YMT form more suited for martial use than other Yang forms? How about for developing the ability to release or return energy? I know the form is supposed to be the Yang Family Hidden form. From my experience it seems to allow for the discovery of the tai ji unified body or whole body movement...

YMT 13 postures versus Duans 1, 2 & 3
In the YMT form, what do Duans 1, 2 & 3 teach that you can't get out of the YMT 13 postures. Now that I've studied the YMT 13 postures, I'm wondering about quality versus quantity. Would I be better off studying and practicing the 13 postures to a very high level or is it important to learn the Duan...

Re: YMT compared to Chen Style
Since I posted this question initially, I've started class/lessons with the YMT group in my area. I'm enjoying it very much. You've answered much of the initial questions I had. Two main questions were - how effect is YMT for martial purposes. I take it from your answer, it must be as effective or m...

Re: YMT compared to Chen Style
I've watched the local YMT group a couple of times and I'm going to study with them. It's certainly more back leg weighted than the Yang style I've studied before, but it also seems to work spiraling energy very well and seems to have a strong lineage. Good point about being able to invest the trave...

Re: YMT compared to Chen Style
Over the last 20 years, I've studied Yang Styles off and on. It's been hard to find teachers. I've learned and forgotten the shorter and longer TT Liang Yang form. Learned from a student/teacher of one of TT Liangs main students. I slowly quit after moving to Madison, WI 15 years ago. There is a Che...

Re: YMT compared to Chen Style
Would someone share some of strengths of the YMT style? What attracted you to it initially and/or what attracted you to stay with the style? I can see from the GRTC main site that the teacher(s) are probably very skilled. So that may have been the entire reasoning for many. But for those who found t...

Re: YMT compared to Chen Style
That makes complete sense. But I may end up with the luxury of being able to pick among multiple styles with skilled teachers. I live in Madison, WI and I don't think there are any martial taiji teachers in town. I'll probably have to drive to Illinois. I assume I might find a number of skilled teac...

Re: YMT compared to Chen Style
Thank you for the reply. I have no experience with Chen Style, however, I have always assumed they are not double weighting, just coming closer than the other styles. It seems to allow them to be lower in some postures. I would guess there are both advantages and disadvantages to the differences bet...

Re: Taiji ruler
Almost a decade ago, there was a hard style martial artist promoting a Lin Kong Jin (empty force) training program that referenced the use of a Taiji Ruler (can't say whether the use of the term was valid or not). It was a wooden dowl about a foot long. With lathed wide and narrow areas (middle was ...

Re: YMT compared to Chen Style
Maybe I can elaborate a little more. BTW, I haven't studied the Chen Style. Only a couple of Yang Styles. But, from the videos YMT looks like it keeps more of the weight on one leg, more of the time. Where many Yang styles seem to work between 60-40 to 70-30 and seem to be a little more upright, Che...

YMT compared to Chen Style
How does YMT compare in general to the Chen Style? What are the advantages of the YMT style compared to others? From your videos, the form looks like you keep the majority of the weight on one leg most, if not all of the time. Is this true in your push hands and San shou forms too?
