Re: Going to Shanghai, soon!
They have an office in DT Shanghai, not sure if it is still there. Their forge is quite a bit outside of SH if i understood them correctly. If you want to see swords there are some old swords in the SH museum, but lots in the BJ military museum if you could make it out there. BTW, most everyone from...

Re: Old Chinese Cane sword
Detail of the throat piece, handle and tang. The throat piece of the scabbard step fits into the throat piece on the handle. Notice there is a notch on the blade, there used to be a spring latch that was riveted in there to keep the sword in the scabbard till the button on the scabbard throat piece ...

Old Chinese Cane sword
Picked this up in Xian couple of weeks ago along with several others. This is the one that i find most interesting. Some pictures of the scabbard. It has some worm holes, is split and warped. It was wrapped in some gauze and tape when i got it. Inside is chisled to fit the blade with rustic steel ti...

Re: Going to Xian next week where to look for swords?
Yes, i suspect that the GuanDao is quite late and way too heavy. I ended up trading it for another that he had that conforms to Qing regulation shape and size. Getting them back from Xian to Shanghai was a little bit of an affair, had to find a truck freight company to bring them over. Train, Postal...

Re: Going to Xian next week where to look for swords?
Picked up some swords today at the antique market. Quite a few DaDaos in various forms and numerous village swords. Dealers here were pretty candid on what was old and what was new, when pressed for high quality items, they simply said that they are pretty much dried up and difficult to come by thes...

Re: Going to Xian next week where to look for swords?
Wandered around the antique shops by the Muslim quarter yesterday and found some Republic era dadaos. I wonder if there was a large garrison of soliders in Xian during that time. Going to check out the sights and some other antique markets today.

Re: Comparison of Japanese and Chinese tangs
Here is a J-sword of mine from the 800s=Tang Dynasty. It is one of the earliest documented standard raised ridge curved saber style J-swords. The bottom hole is original and so is the rust in the bottom part of the tang. No pitting, just very deep black-brown even rust. It was shortened about 6 inch...

Re: Comparison of Japanese and Chinese tangs
The Japanese also treated the tang of the sword with great care both in the construction and maintainence of it. I have not found this behavior in other swords. Swordsmiths spend hours if not days shaping the tang as part of their signature. Owners took time to maintain the tang, making sure to nutu...

Re: Comparison of Japanese and Chinese tangs
Thanks for this detailed explanation. Very interesting. Has there been done any research as to why the patterning on older swords looks deeper and more subtle? Is it the age that does something with the steel, or had it to do with steels / methods used that changed over time? Probably both but i th...

Re: Another shield done
Nice Shield! I am sure it works or it would not have been used for as long as it was. Particularly if moving and used to glance off blows circularly, as opposed to heavy shields that are more like moving walls. Remember the guy behind the shield, and his buddies, are going to try to cut and poke you...

Going to Xian next week where to look for swords?
Headed out to Xian with my sons for a boys week out. Any recommendations for places to look for and look at old swords and other cool stuff? Well, other than the terracotta warrior tomb of course

Re: Comparison of Japanese and Chinese tangs
Generally speaking, dating of J-swords just from the rust on the tang by itself is not very reliable. Weather conditions play a role as pointed out and many swords were shortened from the tang end. J-smiths also filed their tangs in distinct patterns, shortened tangs are usually not filed or filed i...
