A recall of arms, the close of the Qing Dynasty
A tough nut to crack for me as I only read and write English... I have compelling evidence that suggests at the close of the Qing Dynasty there was a recall of Military sidearms/swords within all Chinese states that were moved to various wharehouses in 1911...I guess a change of the guard so to spea...

Re: Butterfly swords/knives
The earliest I have been able to place these with reasonable deductions is approx 1860.
Don't consider them all light weight though They come with and without guards and are typically timber grips.

Re: Dadao
Very interesting variations. Do you have any info on the origins and use of the various types? From a use perspective, in general, simple cheap effective fighting blades My notes and thoughts from the top; A complete and very hard to find Nationalist army dadao with a guard variation. I beleive thi...

Re: Have a look at this short sword
i just showed the pics to a coworker from taiwan (who is taoist) and she said the last 2 is indeed longquan, the 2nd is a very special character that is really 3 together- the upshot is she claims the characters point to it being a jian used by taoist priests, along with a bell, for exorcism of mal...

Re: Another shield done
Thanks for the compliments! As for thrusting, the shield is indeed a lot more vulnerable for the thrust than the cut. We will be sure to also test thrusting and see how that goes. Unfortunately I don't have those long hudiedao at hand but a jian tip will probably do. As for doing damage, there are ...

Re: Another shield done
Peter, Perhaps you can test a theory I have about the Hudiedao and these shields. Do you have any similar Hudiedao the same as the long narrow examples I have? I do wish to know if the can pierce between the wrappings with the strong needle points and in fact damage the arm within the shield. I'd al...

Re: Ming Jian
Thank you Scott for bringing these images to the forum for all to view.
I am interested in viewing the Jian mentioned as being in the leeds armoury at the start of this thread, the link is broken though. Are there images available from anyone for posting?
Best to all for the new year ahead.

Re: Dadao
You have a good eye Peter. It and the one below it, despite being in need of full restoration are my favorites in the hand and they will be restored to some of their former glory. I was very interested when aquiring these to note the differing construction styles, some of which Philip touched on in ...

Dadao
For viewing, comparing and comments. Some are in very good condition, others have seen a hard life in battle, many different styles and contruction methods and differing qualities, some would have been very fine swords in their day. The larger piece is a massive presentation piece but despite its si...

Re: A question of fullers
Thanks for your input Josh. The image doesn't show it very well but the pommel is yuanshi which was another lead indicator for me dating it as I did, though it could well be 19th century. As you note there is no mill scale on the tang at all and the piece as a whole shows very good age and light pit...

Re: A question of fullers
Hi Josh, I suggested this dating because to be honest I have no idea and would rather be critical of my own pieces that stretching the unknown. I also suggest this as it was part of a collection I bought, being amongst Nationalist and Communist Dadao that was put together 20-35 years ago as direct i...

Re: A question of fullers
A false alarm, With regards to the asymmetrical fullering I asked about, the two fullers on one side, upon a very close inspection, turned out to have two very rubbed fullers the other side and they were not very noticable....the search continues for the unusual forms I seek. I have however this sab...

A question of blade tangs and dating
Another question that has been in the back of my mind for sometime now is the swords tang and the dating of swords based on its construction. What features of the swords tang leads one to date a sword? I have available to me dozens of old Dadao, Dao and Jian in various conditions and I note a vast d...
