Sanshou/Tuishou Meetups in Central Park
If any grtc folks happen to be in nyc, I am trying to get together a group of locals to practice sanshou with (though tui shou could be added as well). The idea is for this to be flexible schedule wise and utterly free for participants. We'd keep it to light sparring (no full contact) in the park, s...

Taijiquan in New York City?
The Big Apple is chock full of taijiquan instructors. Are any of them close to grtc?
I saw this: http://aymta.org/home/resources/aymtaschools.html
and this: http://www.williamccchen.com/
I wondered what advice might be found for finding a good school/teacher.

Breaking and Blockages
We've been working on finding the places where we break in class (and correcting the same structural issues in the form). I was wondering if there are any supplemental things we can do to locate and address these problem points on our own (aside from working principles ever more consciously into for...

Muscle Tension
Something that can help with muscle tension is doing the roll down stretches from class, but holding for longer than 20 seconds. Or doing a yoga position like downward dog or a variation on this pose . Just doing the arms from this pose is great for the shoulders and the arms. You can browse by anat...

Mind Intent
Thanks for the responses (and the story!). Looking in the same section, it reads: Saying "looking downward, it seems deeper and deeper," imagine beating the opponent into the earth. That strikes me as referencing mind intent. if the opponent seeks to push me down, I descend so low he loses his cente...

Sizes
Ah but of course good sir!
I think I have a medium sized head (but the calculations were based on weight). I think going to a store to try things out is a capital idea.

Gloves
That guy who reviewed the other gloves mentioned top contender is a bit oddish, he seems to also be into these gloves: http://www.amazon.com/Throwdown-THROWDOWN-MMA-TRAINING-GLOVES/dp/B001138VJ2/ref=cm_cr-mr-title He posted(& pasted) the same review he did for the cageside pair. In any case, he did ...

Gloves & Headgear
Lao Shr ruled out the Kempo gloves, and suggested these. You can follow the link above (last in the list) and order through amazon from ... I kid you not, boomatuna8. Shipping looks cheap though. Or direct from cageside: http://cagesidemma.com/cammasatrgl.html Here's the headgear I found (its pricey...

Looking upward, downward, advancing and retreating
The classics say:
What does this mean?Looking upward, it seems higher and higher
looking downward, it seems deeper and deeper
Advancing, it seems further and further
Retreating, it seems shorter and shorter.

mma gloves
Some of the mma gloves look much more comfortable and less restricting than others, I'm just not sure about the padding. Some of them mention being effectively as padded as 16oz vs 8oz boxing gloves. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing_gloves#Advantages_depending_on_the_weight_of_the_glove It looks ...

Gloves for Sanshou
What gloves would be best for sanshou? I think ideally I'd want gloves that: Have a lot of padding Don't constrict finger movement Are comfortable I found a bunch online: Here's the ones from the catalog at the school: http://www.combatsports.com/CSI/ProductDetails/StyleMasterDetails.aspx?pid={1561a...

Important Exercises
Laoshi mentioned the importance of doing "tiger's back" 3 times a week. So I got to wondering, what exercises outside of the form should one do daily? Weekly?
Is there an ideal frequency for form practice?
(ps is it laoshi or laoshr?)
