Re: Taijiquan against common attacks
Well, a fast inside hook is difficult to block against in general, but I agree that "fair lady works the shuttle" is how I would respond. If you know someone is fond of the hook (say, a sparring partner or tournament opponent), you might be able to move outside of range and roll it back and quickly ...

Re: Trying to teach Taichi as martial arts
Well, sorry to hear you're not openly going to continue teaching, Kungfupanda, but maybe stuff will change in the future. Definitely keep in touch with other knowledgeable folks and let us know what you're up to. Is it difficult to advance your own skill level without teaching or practicing with oth...

Re: Trying to teach Taichi as martial arts
Hey folks, Thought I'd weigh in here, since I have been practicing for a while with Scott Rodell at the DC branch and these kinds of subjects come up in discussions all the time. Finding serious students, and especially ones who value the martial tradition, is just as difficult in Washington DC as i...

Finding quality ginseng
So I have been reading a lot of material on ginseng lately, and have come to realize that most of the store-bought ginseng capsules I have ever tried using were pretty much garbage/fake or just such small dosages as to be ineffective. Short of buying actual ginseng roots, can anyone recommend a part...

Thanks for answering, Laoshi; always curious to hear more about Master Weng and his life and background.

Re: Has anybody read this book?
Yeah, if a lot of the info comes from Yiquan, I wouldn't be surprised if the exercises are awesome. Yiquan has a slew of really interesting (and supposedly very effective) energy training drills, and some martial arts historians and experts have argued that zhan-zhuang's pivotal place in modern Chin...

Feng Shui discussion
Hey folks, I recall Laoshi has mentioned in passing that the late Master Wang was rather knowledgeable in feng shui . How common was this kind of knowledge among people of his cultural milieu? Would he have picked this up casually or as a disciple of someone? Does anybody here have much experience w...

Re: Taiji vs chronic hip pain
Hmm, yeah I feel your pain on multiple levels, LP. I have lousy insurance and can't really afford physical therapy. For myself, I simply try to get them to give me written instructions for good core and back strength exercises which will help support my spine. For the normal person, I'd imagine core...

Re: Taiji vs chronic hip pain
Doing the form over and over and holding each posture, zhuan-zhuang style, for several minutes each, is some of the best practice you'll get, injury or not. While acupuncture and massage are extremely helpful, they will not rebuild lost muscle groups. They are more for helping to relieve chronic ten...

Re: Self Defense for the Streets
If you practice the form hours a day, how much of it comes out in sanshou? For most people, probably about 20% of form skill is retained and translates to sanshou skill. And probably only about 20% of that sanshou skill comes out in a surprise, real situation. Everyone talks big about using martial ...

Re: Intro to General Taiji Discussion
Good thread idea, leftsider. I always have a lot of questions about TJQ that I think about posting here, but then I realize most of them can only satisfactorily be answered by my own consistent practice. However that attitude is a luxury that has a lot to do with being in such constant close proximi...

Re: Self Defense for the Streets
Hey Linda, anything in particular that made you think of this lately? Here are my obvious fundamental rules for not getting attacked! -don't go to dangerous places -don't walk down the street alone at night, in an unfamiliar neighborhood, with an iPod or cellphone in your ear, or while intoxicated -...

Re: Is this Taiji master's power real ?
I wouldn't doubt the dude's skills, but the whole showcase is pretty hokey. The energy stuff looks a lot like Systema drills, where the student reacts in a specific way to the master's non-physical intent.

Re: The Ultimate 5 Principles Thread
Unless otherwise noted, this is all stuff I picked up in class and personal practice. Obviously I left out some things that shouldn't be published on an internet forum, and feel free to moderate if I still did that here. I'd be interested to hear anyone else's thoughts or experiences on the subject,...
