Re: TCSL Tournament 2009
The competition was definitely very close this year, and I think any of the contestants could have taken the day. I think the addition of the "10-point" rule for determining a winner also had a positive effect on the play. I felt the rule increased the value of arm, hand, and leg hits, which simulat...

Hey Trevor, Working to separate well in the form forces one to develop the proper connection between the legs and the torso. The more you mold your body this way, the more you can rely on that connection when sending jin through the body. One gets a similar benefit from the "Holding and Molding" exe...

I came across this short excerpt of Cheng Man Ching talking to his students about qi circulation. As I understand it, it's from a larger 5 DVD set that the Cheng family has put out recently.

Hi nick, I think your point with the guitar-piano metaphor is well-taken. I practice at GRTC in Washington, D.C., and there we practice two traditions of Yang style taijiquan, Zheng Manqing's public style and the Yangjia Michuan system, with that idea in mind. By studying two different forms that ha...

In sanshou class, Laoshi constantly has to remind us to keep our hands up. I thought this clip on youtube was a good illustration of why that's a good idea: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyokcLPl8wM The fight starts at about the 0:55 mark. It starts out pretty rough and tumble, but the man in black...

Consequences of a bad deflection...
If we have the following scenario: The duifang aims a ci at my torso on the tight side; I use a roll-back type deflection, leading the thrust to the side, and then attempt a counter dian to the thigh. What are the strategic disadvantages of a poor deflection in this case? For instance, what if I did...

This round reminded me of the story about how Ueshiba defeated a naval officer armed with a sword in a similar fashion. Supposedly he evaded the officer's attacks until the latter exhausted himself. There's some decent video footage of Ueshiba and his sons on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/results?...
