Taiji and Christianity
As a Christian myself also, taiji isn't an end in itself for my spirituality - the principles and disciplines of the art make it a practical tool for my spiritual life. It is beneficial (some say essential) to be spiritual with all things you do; as the saying goes: make your natural life spiritual ...

Brush Knee
I've just been perusing youtube for fight clips. As you do. I came across Cung Le teaching his method against low kicks (in three parts) that look to me similar to Taiji's brush knee. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7xbDZfZvSo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AD6qHIa_-bo&feature=related http://www.you...

The back foot
Hi. During our Brissy meet-up and sword practice we discussed briefly how much the position of the back foot affects our swordplay. Laoshi made sure with me that with the thrust in the Miao Dao routine that my back foot is placed perpendicular to my direction of travel. The "L" shaped feet position....

True Tashi. It's smart and more honourable to take the "peaceful" alternative. There's much risk of serious (and permanent) injury or loss of life. But the other night I could have prevented someone getting hurt. What if he landed on a rock causing injury to his spine. Although it usually is proper ...

to hurt or not to hurt
Last night I was witness to a violent altercation between a young and angry young man who threatened to "smash" his stepfather. I felt at a bit of a dilemma myself. I had to pull him away from strangling his stepfather (using turn and punch from 24 public yang form) hooking his arm behind his back. ...

being knocked out
Ive come close to being knocked out in the ring a few times, and at times my hands are up - but I was just unlucky in those cases where the punch went through the guard. That small bit of bad luck over time is all the other guy needs however. I think my mistake in almost all the times I've copped re...

Zhan Zhuang at work
My fiancee and I practise zhan zhuang every now and then when we do abit of exercise together. It seems though she gets more practise in than I do. She is a registered nurse working in operating theatres which involves standing up all day handing instruments to doctors. She has found that standing i...

Would lu be similar to slipping back? (Leaning slightly back to put your head just out of reach.) I've been using that on occasion. Although one of the coaches doesn't like me doing it. He'd rather me slide back and popping out a lead jab. I don't know why I'm being discouraged to do it, it's natura...

I notice myself that I only get hit when punching or just finishing a punch. By not throwing anything out, you're uncommitted and can move with more ease and clearer sight. I enjoy moving ever so slightly watching the gloves whizz by and seeing the other guy heaving for breath. I'm finding it hard t...

I can imagine an army looking something like this.

Is it possible to wear a helm AND a fencing mask? Or at least make a helm with a bit more face protection than a metal strip down the nose. A helm is protective enough, but that clanging sound can almost knock me out. I do miss sword sparring!! Do you guys in the Blue Mountains still train with swor...

Hey Tashi. It's not unreasonable at all. I did receive one heavy blow once and stood around a little punch drunk and managed to have a breather. It's a little tricky knowing when to stop with the lighter hits. Cumulative hits that don't really bother you that much start making you feel light headed ...

I'll be able to spar slowly with the martial arts guys. As for the boxers I think it would be difficult to break the tradition of "ring time" being full speed. We discourage full power hits, and the both of us never hit hard out of respect for each other's brains, however moving the head ever so sli...

Saving Brain Cells
Hi. This question is directed mainly at Laoshi and his experience with san shou, but I'd love to have some advice from other people also. My regular boxing sparring partner and I have decided to "tag" the shoulder to count as head shots since both of us have been coming home fairly foggy headed and ...
